When To Replace Your HVAC System

The HVAC system is responsible for your family’s comfort, so taking good care of it should be a priority. However, the system eventually breaks down, and you need a modern, energy-efficient replacement. The guide below will help you determine when to replace your HVAC system.

Old System

The age of your HVAC system is an excellent indicator of when it’s time for a replacement. Although manufacturers build HVAC components to be durable, most of them start to deteriorate after the 10 year mark.

However, just because your model is over 10 years old doesn’t mean you should plan for a replacement. The lifespan of an HVAC system depends on how well it is maintained and the frequency of use. Some units reach 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance. However, an older system is prone to failure, and replacing it ensures you don’t stay without heating or cooling.

If you moved into your house and found a functional HVAC system, check the inside of the chamber door for a metal nameplate. Some units have a manufacturing date, while others only list a model and serial number. You can contact the manufacturer and give the numbers to determine the system’s lifespan.

Higher Energy Bills

If your energy bills keep increasing without explanation, your HVAC system may be to blame. Heating and cooling appliances lose efficiency as they age, and the accumulation of dust and corrosion in various components makes the HVAC system work harder to maintain the desired temperatures.

The less efficient a heating and cooling system is, the more you pay for energy bills. In contrast, newer HVAC units are incredibly energy-efficient, so you will see a drastic decline in your energy bills.

Insufficient Heating or Cooling

Your HVAC system blows warm air in winter and cold air in summer. However, HVAC units don’t always work as they should for various reasons, such as clogged air filters, leaky ductwork, and inaccurate thermostat.

Sometimes, the reason for inconsistent temperatures is complex and requires replacing the entire HVAC system. For example, an oversized unit short cycles constantly, resulting in cold and hot spots. An undersized HVAC system also struggles to heat and cool your home and is more likely to break down. Have a professional install a correctly-sized unit if you have an oversized or undersized HVAC unit.

Frequent Repairs

Your HVAC system occasionally needs repairs, whether it’s a damaged blower, dirty coils, refrigerant leaks, or a malfunctioned thermostat. But, a malfunctioning HVAC unit needs more frequent maintenance, and you may have to replace major components like the compressor.

Repair costs for HVAC systems can get quite expensive, and you should consider a replacement if they are more than half the expense of a new unit. A new HVAC system saves you money in the long run because it needs fewer repairs and is more energy-efficient.

Unusual Noises

HVAC systems make some background sounds during normal operations, but they should be easy to ignore. If your unit starts making loud banging, hissing, and groaning sounds, it could be nearing its end of life.

HVAC noises have a range of causes, including loose parts, broken fan motors, faulty compressors, and worn-out belts. If the repair costs for these issues are hefty, consider replacing your HVAC system.

Odd Smells

Unusual smells are a signal that something is wrong with your HVAC system. If you detect moldy smells from the unit, mold and mildew may be growing in the ductwork. Melting plastic and burning metal smells are quite severe as they indicate a problem with the electrical wiring or motor. Turn off the HVAC system immediately and have an HVAC expert check your unit.
